Routes / Programme:
On the first day, after picking up your rental car at Malaga or Jerez de La Frontera airports and having travelled to the hotel, you will receive a warm and charming welcome at Hotel Fuerte Grazalema, where the details of your excursions shall be finalised.
You can choose 3 of the 4 activities on offer, as detailed below. On your 'relax' days, you will definitely not be short of things to do (if you really want to do something). You can either make full use of the hotel's facilities, get lost in the streets of beautiful Grazalema, or even get acquainted with the famous town of Ronda, located just 20 kilometres from hotel.
Activity 1: Vía Verde de la Sierra (The Sierra Greenways)
These greenways are former railways in a rich and diverse area which have been given a new lease of life for tourist activities. There are two starting point possibilities for this route; we can either start in Olvera or in Puerto Serrano. Upon leaving Olvera we will pass through several nature reserves and sites of cultural interest such as the 'Peñon de Zaframagón' (with the largest colony of griffon vultures in Andalusia) and the "Chaparro de la Vega" of Coripe (13-metre high Holm oak awarded Best Natural Monument of Andalusia in 2001).
In 2009 the Via Verde de la Sierra was awarded Best European Greenway by the European Greenways Association.
* Starts and finishes in Olvera (46.5 km from the hotel - 45 minutes). Or starts and finishes in Puerto Serrano (52km Hotel - 50 minutes).
* Bike rental available for 12 Euros/person
Activity 2: Rowing in the Zahara de la Sierra Reservoir
Double kayak rowing in the emerald waters of the Zahara de la Sierra reservoir, where you can you will be to enjoy the spectacular views of the Zahara castle, the Lajarín peak and the Las Palomas mountain pass.
Activity 3: Rock climbing introduction
Leaving the hotel on foot, we will head towards the village and after approximately 1km walk we will find the Grazalema climbing walls on the left hand side. The instructors will give you a short safety brief and teach you the basics of rock climbing and the different route levels available to climb (see the book "Andalusia: Climbing Guide" (Andalucía: Guía de escalada deportiva) by David Munilla, which also has explanatory sketches). We will then begin climbing on the easiest routes.
Activity 4: One of the routes from the Easy/Medium Hiking Package Route: (Route 1 is recommended)
Activity 5: Ronda or Benaoján Via Ferratas
The via ferratas allows hikers (especially those not afraid of heights) to reach places that they could only dream about, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the most incredible views around from unexplored vantage points.
The Ronda Via Ferrata, and its steep cliff, is situated in an amazing location, simply a must for beginners. It was previously used by workers in the Seville area in the 20s and now has been given a new lease of life.
The Benaoján Via Ferrata is also very beautiful, as it is not too long and has a short section featuring enormous rocks and a small Tibetan style bridge, ideal for those who have already tackled other via ferratas.
On the Benaoján route, we will also visit the very famous Cave, the 'Cueva del Gato'.
If you choose to visit the ancient city of Ronda, one of the most beautiful Historical Areas in Spain (and declared Site of Cultural Interest in 1995), then feel free to contact the Oficina Municipal de Turismo for individual tours.
The Hotel Fuerte Grazalema is located in the beautiful Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, around 20km away from Ronda and boats a pool and jacuzzi, with outdoor sundecks and rooms with free Wi-Fi.
All rooms have a private balcony or terrace with magnificent views of the Guadalete Valley. Rooms also have air-conditioning, a hairdryer, a minibar and satellite TV.
The Fuerte Grazalema also has an organic animal farm and an organic garden. Guests are also welcome to take part in Andalusian cooking workshops and taste some of region’s best dishes in the hotel’s restaurant.
What to bring:
Good boots (preferably shoes that have already been broken into to avoid any problems) and good walking socks. When to go:
